The Social Dilemma - not a documentry review!
It was an interesting format for a documentry. It was not just a documentry, but a short story was within there too. It was powerful and highly relatable.
In this short story, there are three characters. All are teens of different age.
The elder one does not like spending her time on her phone 24*7. She also despises overuse of it by her siblings.
His younger brother does like it very much. Actually, he has been being controlled by all automated alogrithms of social media. They shows us content in our feeds directly influenced by what happens in our real life.
They manage to do it, as they've got people to analyse his perosnal data, trying to not only dictate his attention, but to bring a real change in behaviour that makes him want to use more of their platforms. They show the selected posts that does interest him already, so he gets his believes reinforced by unconscious repitiation. He dramtically ends up in police arrest after joining a political protest, after getting influenced by speakers on social media. That was an extreme case, but yeah, it's scary the level of influence the content we consume 24*7 can have on us.
The most agonising pain you feel when you witness their younger sister, diving deep in her social media posts, continuesouly checking likes and comments. Getting anxious over the mean comments. Self-sabtoging herself. And social vaildation become big part of her life. When she posts a picture of herself, one friend comments, monkey ears, and it deeply disturbs her and make her insecure.
As some experts said, these platforms provide opportunities to getting vaildation from thousands and even millions of people at once. But that does not really help in kepping one's mental health better.
These SM platforms even spread misinformation in an attempt to manipulate behaviours and pushing ideolgies which makes for unhealthy political environment.
This also feels like promotion of one of the experts' company Humane, for does it represent the guy as the saviour from evil tech. Though we must admit he made a lot of sense in what he discussed and shared. Even with ideas to fight the battle.
Talking of battles, one of them respresneted this whole scene as a fight where compnies have armed with weapons.
An issue I would have liked if included was responding, replying, and reacting to the messages. It is so virtual it feels fake. While at the same time we are so addicted to it, it feels - it means world - how someone chooses to respond. Which includes when they choose not to at all. Or they say something you don't enjoy. It can be really toll on mind. And can induce anxiety and insecurity and restlessness so much.
If we were to draw a conclusion - it should be an individual's responsibility how he manges his time with phone. And also what content he choose to interact with. Abuse of these platforms definitely not going to help.
For children under 18, there should be really legal protection from disturbing, raging, and destructible ideas, in my humble opinion.
One thing I'd really like to explore is, how likely it is that there would be a civil war due to avaliable misinformation and propeganda? And that's why I'd also like to know how previous civil wars started and ended and fought.
We ain't gonna killl each-other. tmThat's for sure, I insist. But wow! Their confidence was worry giving when they said the words.
Wacthing It demanded the very patience we are deprived of - thanks social media - but it's worth it.
It was actually needed in times of covid, and youth's great addiction to technology.
Thank you for reading!
Btw, what's your mobile addiction story?
